Three people, including two teenagers, were killed and five injured, when they were struck by lightning in the Russian Volga Republic of Bashkortostan, a local emergencies spokesman said on Thursday.

The tragedy happened at about 17:00 Moscow time [13:00 GMT] on Wednesday. The people were on the bank of the Kama River, when the lightning hit them.

The injured were admitted to hospital in Neftekamsk, 200km (136 miles) away from Bashkortostan's capital Ufa.
