Four tonnes of milk produce has been confiscated following the discovery of the cancerous substance aflotoxin M1 in products from three out of 14 dairy companies.

Head of the Veterinary Service Charalambous Kakoyannis told state radio that there are still high volumes of aflotoxin M1 at ten cattle breeding units.

Tests are continuing across the island by inspectors from the agriculture department.

Kakoyannis said that aflotoxins had been found in 54 out of the 225 cattle breeding units where samples were taken.

He added that the EU set levels of aflotoxins in milk at around 50 units per three million.

As of this morning, checks will also be conducted at pig and poultry farms.
