I've covered a lot of strange stories and this one ranks right up there as one of the weirdest.

When we were first tipped off to this loud noise and flash of light disturbing people in the Pikesville area, I immediately thought of lightning. But as the old saying goes, "Lightning never strikes the same place twice," let alone the same place dozens of times a year. So it was fair to say I was skeptical.

Then I met Bonnie and Elaine--two women who live near the area with no reason to lie. In fact, the noise and light had been bothering them so much, they were doing something about it. They had been startled out of bed so many times they even recounted to me how they've switched their bedrooms so that they could sleep further away from the sound. Of course, even that didn't help. Though they were dealing with a serious problem, they kept a great sense of humor that made me want to tell their story even more.

Then I talked to police.

Officers Posluszny and Warehime admitted they were baffled and needed help figuring this out. When something this strange stumps seasoned officers, you're on to a good story. They detailed for me how they had investigated and ruled out every scenario I could think of, and some I hadn't. The more I talked to them, the more I realized why something that sounds like an explosion needs to be taken seriously by the police. Not only is this a quality of life issue for the people who live in the Pikesville area, but until police know for sure--the question of potential danger to people in the area still lingers.

Then I saw the video.

At that point, I knew no matter what was causing "it", "it" really was a genuine news story. Something was flashing bright, in the middle of the night and making a deafening sound. The flash lasted only one frame of video--that's 1/30th of a second. I had to slow the video down for viewers even to be able to notice it.

Everyone I told about it had their own theories.

Some believed there was a scientific explanation.

Some called it a hoax.

Some even speculated it was supernatural.

Everyone was talking about it and the story hadn't even aired yet.

So from here, I just hope.

I hope we find out for Elaine, for Bonnie, for their neighbors, and even for Officer Posluszny, who told me he wouldn't retire until this mystery is solved.

And when that story happens, I want to tell it--whatever "it" is.
