Fox News reported Monday that a Roman Catholic bishop in the Netherlands has suggested that Christians start referring to "God" as Allah as a way of bridging the cultural divide. Fox then invited Father Jonathan Morris, a Catholic priest, and Imam Shamsi Ali of the Jamaica Muslim Center to debate this proposal.

"I don't think he speaks for Catholics," said Father Morris of the bishop. "If I'm going to use an Arabic word to refer to the supreme being, I'm trying to make some sort of point. And that point, I would assume, is that somehow I have the same understanding of 'God' as Muslims do, and the fact is, we don't."

"When Muslims call 'God' Allah, what we means is 'our creator,' and he's the creator of Christians and the Jewish," replied Imam Ali. "In fact, not only 20 million Christians in the Middle East call 'God' Allah, but also some Jewish even, in Yemen for instance."

"I have no reason whatsoever to think that Ali here doesn't worship the same god ... I don't know if he does or not. But ... there are people all over the world ... who are using the word Allah in order to refer to a supreme being who supposedly invites them or commands them to kill the innocent in his name," objected Father Morris.

"I think we have to be very careful," Imam Ali cautioned. "Even all terrorists using the name of Allah ... I think is not a reason to avoid the name Allah."
