At a time when the average house price across the UK is around £200,000, an advert offering a four-bedroom house in Edgbaston for £53,500 was bound to catch the eye.

Unfortunately for a host of potential buyers, and the home's owners Anne and Tony Edwards who were deluged with calls and visits, the advert was 25 years out of date.

Details of the property, a detached home with two bathrooms, were included in an archive issue of the Birmingham Mail, reprinted to celebrate Aston Villa's European Cup success in 1982.

The number underneath the advert was for the show house on a new development, and the couple haven't changed it since moving into the property 24 years ago.

Ms Edwards told the Birmingham Mail she had not seen the reprinted advert because she had been watching Aston Villa play Sheffield United.

"When I got home there were four missed calls on my answer machine asking to view my house," she said. "The calls were coming in so thick and fast that I put an answer machine message on the phone telling people it was all a mistake."

Ms Edwards said one potential buyer had offered £60,000 for the property, far less than the £500,000-£700,000 currently being asked for homes in the area.

"We have no intention of selling, however, especially not at the offers we have been made so far," she added.
